WhatsApp intends to replace the phone number with a nickname

According to the application's dedicated website, a number of new features are currently being developed for the WhatsApp messaging service, including screen sharing and search by usernames. These capabilities are now only available in beta versions. WABetaInfo.

Users of the app can select a distinctive username that is associated with their account using the search by usernames feature. As a result, users may locate one another on WhatsApp by using their nickname rather than their phone number.

Conversations started with a "username" are end-to-end encrypted, claims WABetaInfo. The appearance of the screen sharing feature was also highlighted by beta testers. Using this feature, users can share the content of their screens during video calls.
